University City today is a center for business, education, health care, and retail. Original plans called for an semi-urban town center surrounded by the growing University and many multi-family neighborhoods. Unfortunately, growth took a turn for the worse with the introduction of big-box retail. The area today suffers from a distinct lack of identity any more than a congested intersection next major centers of generic retail and a state university. Smarter growth could help to restablish a sense of place and help to reduce congestion into the future.
